SQUADRON TRAPPED.
BETWEEN TWO FIRES
BOERS IN AUSTRALIAN DEESS.
KLERKSDORP, May 21
Colonel Williams' column has returned, having1 trekked since the sth iiist. On the 10th inst., near Koranafontein, a body of- Boers were sighted, who opened a heavy fire from the b\ish. We returned their fire by bringing- into action the pompoms and Maxims.' Later a squadron of New South Wales Mounted .Rifles was sent to clear the enemy from the rriealie field. They went further than intended, and came in touch with a large body of the enemy. Heavy firing ensued at a range of eight hundred yards. Meanwhile the Boers in the bush, who were dressed in khaki, with Australian hats, rode up leisurely behind the squadron engaged, and as they advanced at a walk, they were taken for supports until within speaking distance, when they suddenly opened fir." on our men, who were thus between two fires. Lieutenant Lamb and five men were killed, and Captain Maclean and eight men wounded. Twelve men were taken prisoners, and afterwards released. The remainder fell back on the column.
The Boer loss is believed to be heavier than ours.
