'(Before Mr H. W. Brabant, S.M.) Drunkenness—For this offence Mary Donovan was fined 5/ or 24 hours' hard labour. One first offender was tonvieted and discharged. Charles Reid, a young man, was fined £1 for disorderly behaviour while drunk, and £2 and costs in default 14 clays' hard labour for resisting Constable Rock in the execution of his duty. Alleged Theft. — Four youths names John Simmond, John Walker, Charles Hatton and Solomon Levy were charged with stealing a quantity of clothing, value £5, the property of some persons unknown Accused pleaded not guilty, stating that they had only arrived from Sydney a week ago, and a fortnight alter the date of the alleged theft. ChiefDetective Grace appeared for the prosecution, and on his application the ease was adjourned till next Monday. Barney Molloy, alias Jeremiah Donovan charged with stealing a pair ol trousers, the property of John Green was remanded till Wednesday for a 'report from the Probation Officor Dismissed.-Henry Belcher for •whom Mr Cotter appeared, pleaded not guilty to using insulting lan* gunge in a public place to Constable Lipscombe. The hitter stated that in Queen-street on Saturday night lie was struck on the back with a raw potato, and turning round saw accused behind him. Accused denied having thrown the potato, and made use of insulting language to witness. l?or the defence accused denied having either thrown the potato or made us°e of any insulting- language. He neither did anything to nor spoke to the constable prior to being arrested. Accused's evidence was corroborated by two other witnesses, His Worship dismissed the case. Theft.—Henry Clark, who had pleaded guilty last week to stealing knives and forks, value £2, and a cruet value £1, at the Star Hotel, came up for sentence. The Probation Officer's report was unfavourable, and accused was sentenced to six months' hard labour.
