DEVONPORT.

The ordinary meeting- of the Devonport Borough Council was held last evening, when there "were present Messrs M. INlecol (Mayor), R. Duder, W. Handley, R. Logan, jun., W. Philson, J. Walker, E. Mason and J. Harrison.

Ferry Service—The Mayor and Messrs Duder and Walker were appointed to represent the Council a£ a conference of citizens of Auckland reference to the Jforth Shore ferry service.

Police. —The Inspector of Police wrote, in answer to the Council's letter, stating that the Devonport police had beeu instructed to exercise extra vigilance in suppressing acts of larrikinism in the borough. —The Mayor said there had been further complaints with reference to acts of larrikinisrn in the borough.—The letter was received. —Mr O. Mays wrote complaining that some persons had recently broken the windows of the public school, and asked that the Inspector of Police be informed of the matter. —The letter was received, and it was decided to send a copy to the Inspector of Police. Sewer Gas. —Mr J. Alexander wrote on behalf of several residents in the borough protesting against a nuisance caused by sewer gas from the public drains. —The matter was. referred to the engineer. Telephone Exchange.—The secretary of the Telegraph Department wrote, in answer to the Council's application for the establishment of a telephone exchange at Devonport, stating that the matter would receive immediate attention. —On the Mayor's motion it was decided to ask for a three-cord cable. Public Health.—lt was resolved that the town clerk (Mr Webster) be authorised to sign all notices to residents in the borough under the Public Health Act.—lt was decided that a notice be served on Mr J. H. Hannan to abate a nuisance caused by his failure to connect his property with the main drain. —The town clerk said there were some 17 other cases which would be dealt with. Streets and Works. —The following were the recommendations of the Streets and Works Committee, as presented to the Council:—(l) Ann-street North, re E, Bartley's drainage. Complaint of position of drainage boundary trap to his property: After investigation it was decided to recommend that the foreman of works make up estimate of continuing a six-inch pipe up as far as Mr Bartley's back gate.— (3) High-street footpath: That the footpath be put in order temporarily at the estimated cost of £5. — (3) Jubilee Avenue drainage: That Mr Savage give estimate for new sewer and boundary connections in Jubilee Avenue from Cheltenham Road to opposite Mr Harvey's property.—(4) Domain - street footpath, re Capt. McKenzie's request for level of footpath,

The Commutes ■ recommend thai an iron pipe culvert • be placed at the entrance to Mr Wells* and bigger pipes replace the present ones for carrying off the storm water. — (5) Stanley-street gas lamp: That the Stanley-street gas"" lamp be shifted to oppositel the boundary fence dividing Mr Entrican's and Mr Burgess* properties, and that another one be put in a suitable position in Domainstreet.—(o) Grey-street cutting: That the cutting- down of the path by Mr; Cameron's in Grey-street be left^in tha hands of Mr Savag-e to carry out.—(7)J Tudor-street drainage: That the fore-* man of works give an estimate of cost; for 0-inch main in Tudor-street, including boundary traps.—(S) Kerrstreet East drainage: That nothing bat I done till Mr Savage has examined the existing pipe drain in Kerr-street East and his report obtained.— (9) Roslyn Terrace footpath: That the footpath, in Roslyu Terrace be extended to Messrs Scott Bros.', as requested bys them.— (10) Kiwi Road footpath: Thati the making of the footpath at tha lower end of Kiwi Road be carried out. —Clause 5, re Stanley-street lamp, was referred back to the Committee. Tha rest of the report was adopted. Water.—The following recommendations of the Waterworks Cominittea were adopted:—Re supply of water to»Auckland Harbour Board: The Committee recommend that water be sup* plied to Auckland Harbour Board fon | shipping, from northern shore of theSj harbour only, at 1/ per 1000 gallons. i —(2) Meters to be put on Dock and iD.S! Ferry Co.: That the Council give* | effect to resolution adopted on Sthi January .1901, and notices be sent to> the Auckland Harbour Board and Devonport Ferry Company to fix meters within three months, and that, failing to do so, the Council put in. the meters, charging rental for same. Dairies and Abattoirs. —The Finances and Legal Committee recommended:— (1) Dairy Inspection: That the mattery of dairy inspection be deferred until receipt of copy of regulations referred to in circular. —Abattoirs: That con*, sideration of building abattoirs, etc.^, be deferred for 12 months:. Overcrowding. — Mr A. E. Devore, solicitor, wrote giving his advice in, regard to the section in the Municipal Corporations Act dealing with over-' crowding in the building of houses;, in boroughs. He advised the Council that, according to the *Act, an open space of at least 150 square feet must be left by the owner of any house, when building, at the rear or at the sides of the house, and that there must be a space of at least ten feet left either at the sides or at the rear between the house and the boundary; fence of the adjoining property. How* ever, the whole section was difficult to adyise upon.—Several Councillors pointed out that, according to this section, a person might build right up to his neighbour's boundary, and] alongside the next house, so long as: the statutory space was left at the rean of the house. —After some discussion the solicitor's opinion was adopted. Gas Works Committee. —On the mo* tioh. of the Mayor it was resolved y "That the Municipal Gas Works Com-* mittee be reformed, and to consist?, of Messrs. Handley, Walker, Logan* Dunning, Mackay and the Mayoiy three to form a quorum." 1 Rating.—On the Mayor's motion it} was resolved that the Council levyr a, general rate of ljd in the £ on all rateable properties within the bor* oug-h, for the year ending March. 31* 1902. to be payable in one sum on June 1, 1901.
