ONEHUNGA.
Tile fortnightly meeting of the Onehunga Borough Council was held in thei Council Chamber last night. There were present Crs. Rowe, Hill, Rishn worth, Stoupe, McLeod, Vause, Kelsalli, In the absence of His Worship the* Mayor (Mr D. A. Sutherland) Cr, J» Howe was voted, to the chair. i Fire Brigade. The secretary of that Fire Brigade wrote requesting thet Council to erect a firebell in UppeQ Queen-street. They also requested thatj ! the brigade gear be generally overhaul* | ed, and new torches supplied. On the* motion of Cr. Rowe, seconded by Cr. Vause, the matter was referred to the* Council in committee. : Gas Extension.—The secretary of the{ Auckland Gas Company wrote intimat* ing that the directors had agreed to- ex-* tend the gas mains along to Church and Hill streets. The letter was received. Removal of Nightsoil.—The Council in* committee reported conferring with the* nightsoil contractor, and recommended that the sanitary by-laws be amended; so as to enforce weekly services. Cr^ Yause moved the adoption of the report, Crs. Rowe, Hill and McLeod spoka against the motion, and on the amend-* inent of Cr. Rowe ilie report was refer-* red back to the Council for further con-* sideration. Electric Trams.—A communication: was received from Mr Hansen enelosing| copy of Order-in-Council for the con-« struction of the electric trams in thei borough. ! Petition.—A petition requesting thei Council to allow cows to graze upon tha side street in the east of the boroughi was held over till next meeting. Water Rate. —Mr Barnes wrote re* questing the Council to discontinue the( charge of 7/6 per annum water rate for» each of his horses, as he was informed upon reliable authority that such z& levy was not made upon any other person in the town. The town clerk stated that now he had notified the owners ofi stock that the annual charge must bft paid. The letter was received. Financial Statement. —The town clerK made the usual fortnightly financial statement, after which accounts amounting to £723 6/6 were passed foi? payment. ; Public Library.—Cr. Rowe upon no* tice moved, "That a committee con-* sisting of the Mayor and Crs. Rishwortljj Stoupe, Kelsall, Vause and the movcf be appointed to bring up a report at ft' future meeting of the Council with r#« gard to providing a public library fo» Onehunga.
