The youth, Edward Joseph James Maugan, who pleaded guilty on Monday to a charge of stealing cheques to the value of £11, the property of W S. Laurie, came up for sentence. His Worship said the report of the Probation Officer as to accuseds character was very unfavourable. Mr Lundon, on behalf of the prisoner, asked that the case might stand down till the afternoon, in order to give him an opportuity of calling viitnesscs as to character. The application was granted by His Worship, Chief Detective Grace offering no objection- ,

(Before Mr T. Hutchison, S.M.) Drunkenness.'—Por this offence William Williams and Patrick Coleman were sentenced to one week's iinpri&onment, it being the fifth conviction of each within six months. John Clarke was fined 10/ and costs or 48 hours hard labour for a third offence, Mary Akerley 5/ or 24 hours, and four first offenders were convicted and discharged. John Stevens was fined £1 for disorderly conduct while drunk.

Theft of Jerseys.—Two men named James Thompson and Thomas Williams were jointly charged with stealing four jerseys, value 12/, the property of J. R. Self. Thompson admitted "the theft, but the other man pleaded not guilty. A witness deposed to seeing Thompson stand up against Self's door, close to some jerseys. The man took some of the jerseys, put them under his coat and went off behind the City Hall with another man who was waiting for him. The witness did not see Williams at all. One of Mr Self's employees deposed to seeing Williams walking along Elliott-street with a parcel undeß his arm, containing what appeared to be jerseys. Witness asked the man for a match, and while Williams was getting one out, witness lifted the paper which covered the parcel and saw the jerseys, which he identified as the missing ones. Williams said he found the jerseys in the right-of-way behind the City Hall. Thompson said he had given the jerseys to "the lame man" (Williams). The latter on the other hand denied ever having seen Thompson before in his life. His Worship discharged Williams, as he had some dotibt as to whether the man intended to steal the jerseys. Thompson was sentenced to one month's imprisonment.

The Bankruptcy Act. — A man named Adolph Rreuss was charged that being an undischarged bankrupt he did obtain credit from John 01----sen by false pretences. Mr Shera appeared for the Official Assignee and asked for a remand for eight days, stating that there were Dine charges against the accused, involving £150. The case was adjourned accordingly, bail being allowed in. two sureties of £100 each.

Trespass. — James Gilnaour was charged with trespassing on the property of Thomas Coates, at Orakei, in pursuit of game. Defendant pleaded guilty, but said he was only crossing Mr Coates' land to get on to Maori land, where he had permission to shoot. Mr Mahony, who appeared for the prosecution, said Mr Coates did not press for a heavy penalty, merely wishing to give publicity to the fact that the public must not trespass on his land. His Worship inflicted the nominal penalty of 5/, with costs 30/.

Alleged Assault. —Arthur Johnson was remanded for another eight days on a charge of assaulting Christopher Saunders so as to cause him actual bodily harm. Sub - Inspector Mitchell said the ITospital authorities thought the injured man would not be able to leave the institution for another three weeks. Bail -was allowed as before.
