OBITUARY.
The death is announced of the Rev. Walter Johns-ton, who has been*for many years a resident in this colony. The deceased was the eldest .son of Henry George Johnston, of Port, Johnston, Go. Monaghan, Ireland, and succeeded to the family property on his father's death in 18(19. Mr Johnston took his degree at Trinity' College, Dublin, and then joined the Army, serving- for some years' in. India in troublous times. While still a youxig' man he decided to enter the e-hurch, and was ordained by the Bishop of Ripon, afterwards Archbishop of Canterbury. In 1867 the PTinjaike of Ireland presented him vWili the living of Connor, County Antrim., and he was nominated Ca*non of the Ancient Cathedral of St. Saviour's. In 187S Canon Johnston came to New Zealand with Mr Vesey Stewart's second special settlement, and took up land in Katikati, where he resided fort 19 years, only coming" to Auckland some four years ago,1 when his health began to fail. He had been ailing1 for some time past, but died very suddenly from failure of the heart, at the advanced ag-e of 77. The .deceased gentleman leaves a large family, some of whom axe settled in this province. The eldest son, who succeeds to the property, resides in Ireland.
