THE KATE TATHAM.
On her last run from New Zealand to Sydney the barquentlne Kate Tatham 'seems to have had to bear the full force of the same'disastrous gale in which the Federal foundered. Captain Nunns reports "tfiat there was a terrific sea and that the *ttle vessel had to run before the storm
under bare pules, and with oil bags over the side. Out tremendous sea thai curve thundering ou board started the deck-load of timber, flooded the cabin, and hurled the boatswain against the ship s bide, with the result that lie was rather severely injured. Binnacle and compass-went, also both ends of the companion,wlnle the wheel was completely demolished, together witli the hardwood*cover over the .-crew steering gear. Having brought the ship to the wind with tackles on the rudder, Captain Nanus ana his men got the injured boatswain below, uailcd a new awning over the broken companion, and then rigged up a temporary wheel. The gale shortly afterwards moderated.
