SCRIPTURE GIFT ASSOCIATION
The annual meeting of tbe Scripture Gift Association was held at six o doe* yesterday evening in High-street, ahe report stated that a large number or books had been given as prizes for the learning of portions of Scripture, whilst gifts to libraries, hospitals, reading rooms, ships, bush mills, boarding-houses, etc., had been made us liberally us the society's stock would permit. The encouragement of lads iv evening homework nud self-improvement had been carried on by awarding occasional prizes, and satisfactory results had accrued. Through the private efforts of friends there had been a considerable circulation of useful reading in the Upper Thames goldstie.ds district. Seamen and liremen of steamers visit Lug the port had also been supplied with useful reading mutter. Seven day schools for young children, with an average attendance of 200 scholars, continued in satisfactory working order. The Board tendered hearty thanks to subscribers, to the executive of the Religious Trac.t Society, London, for free grant and delivery of books and magazines to the valueof £25; to Messrs Macky, Logan, Steeu and Co., and Messrs Smith and Caughey, for free delivery of parcels from London; to the trustees of St. Sepulchre's schoolroom, Sy-monds-street: of the .Wesleyan schoolroom, Onehnnga and of the Edendalu Hall. Mount Roskill, for free accommodation; to the Northern Steamship Company, for free passes to the society's agent; to the same company, and also to the McGregor and Coastal Steamship Companies, for the free carriage of the society's parcels; to the proprietors of the Christian Worker, for surplus stock donated; and to the auditors, Messrs J. M. Burr and B. A. Brown, for their voluntary services. The balance-fheet, which was adopted, was as follows:—Dr.: To balance from last year, £15 15/1; subscriptions and donations, £°02 12/5; Christmas collecting cards, £3 17/0; sale of day school supplies, £1 12/0; loan library fees, £1 4/; discount, 5/; donation box, 11/0: total, £225 18/. Cr.: By remittances to London, £35; booksellers, Auckland, £25 13/9; schoolroom rentals, £23 10/; payments to teachers, £15 10/0; school sundries, £10 5/0; printing, wallsheets, reports, etc., £16 2/0; Insurance and rates, £8 10/8: postabe, £4 12/10; railway and omnibus fees, etc., £3 15/6; depot aid, £9 1/3; commission on collecting, country, £4 10/0; magazines, newspapers, etc, £4 &/: ngent's fee, 12 months, £48; general sundries, £8 3/11; balance carried forward, £13 7/1; total, £225 18/.
