George William Smith, a young man, pleaded not guilty to a charge of having at Devonporl indecently assaulted it little girl named j-'va Miti-v MeKenzie. under the age of lij years. Prisoner was not rep resell ted by counsel, lie gave evidence on his own behalf, and denied the truth ot the girl's statemeni eOTwerning the alleged assault. He also denie'i staving'confessed to the girl's relatives that he had commilied the nfleiy-e, and was sorry for it, or having offered money to Mr MeKenzie to hos'-t the mat ter up.
