Carl Carlson, who pleaded guilty vcste.*dav to a charge of theft from the 'person, 'came up . lor sentence this morning.- Mis Honor staled that: as prisoner was a, first offender he would take a lenient view of the case. Prisoner was ordered lo enter into a bond of i.':.'."> to com- up for sentence if called upon within the next twelve months . A SERIOUS CHARGE. George William Smith, a young man, pleaded not guilty to a charge of having at Devonporl indecently assaulted it little girl named j-'va Miti-v MeKenzie. under the age of lij years. Prisoner was not rep resell ted by counsel, lie gave evidence on his own behalf, and denied the truth ot the girl's statemeni eOTwerning the alleged assault. He also denie'i staving'confessed to the girl's relatives that he had commilied the nfleiy-e, and was sorry for it, or having offered money to Mr MeKenzie to hos'-t the mat ter up. The jury without retiring returned a verdict of guilty. Prisoner was then remanded till Monday, to give him ap opportunity of calling witnesses as to character before sentence is passed. ' "* '■
