Tn probably every church and chapel throughout the wide dominion of the British Empire yesterday the ser-j vices were in memory of our late be-; loved Queen, Victoria the Good. What took place in Auckland was but a re-^ flection of similar observances in Great; Britain, in Canada, in Australia, and throughout New Zealand. The pulpits,: as a rule, were draped in black, and many of the worshippers gave outward . expression of their grief at the lossi of one so great, so good, and so re-^ vered by wearing bands or bows of j crape. In the Anglican churches; special prayers were said, and in all^ churches the hymns were appropriate: to the occasion. "The Dead March in-, Saul" was played in a great many,; churches, the people standing, and preachers, it might be said, vied with; each other in eulogy of the great Good Queen. -Many of the services were, made exceedingly impressive. The. reality of the nation's loss as an individual loss was very generally, brought home-to those who had assembled to mourn; yet the tone of the preachers was generally one of thanksgiving for the great good by, which the reign of Queen Victoria had; been marked and £or the length of. her days rather than of unalloyed sor-: tow because of her decease.
