THE ABARENDA.

The United States transport Abarenda, Commander B. F. Tilley, arrived from Samoa this morning, after a somewhat lengthy passage of 11 days. The transport left Apia at 6.50 am. on November 29, and experienced southerly winds, with occasional squalls, all the way to arrival at 5 a.m. to-day. On Sunday, 2nd Inst, the packing round the tall shaft worked loose, and the vessel took in a little water. In order to effect repairs the after ballast tanks were emptied, the water being pumped forward. This had the effect of raising the stern out of the water, and the shaft was re-packed, a somewhat difficult undertaking in a sea way. The work occupied about eight hours, the steamer being kept on her course meanwhile by means of her sails. She was again stopped for an hour next day for examination, after which she was put on her course, and arrived as above. While in port the Abarenda will be docked for overhaul of her hull and engines, and before returning to Samoa she wil! take in 4000 tons of Westport coal for the U.S. naval station at Tutuila. Commander Tilley has the following officers wit him, there being several changes since the vessel left Auckland on February 4th last: First lieutenant, G. H. Stafford; ensign, L. C. Richardson; senior boatswain, H. E. Olsen; paymaster, C. Morris; surgeon, Dr. Blackwell; warrant machinist,. G. T. Russell.
