The Devonport district now por,cs,ses an excellent brass band of thirty iperformers, under Bandmaster A. R, Hir.itoiv At a meeting of the band held last evening it was decided to register under the Unclassified Societies Act. The great success of this band is chiefly due to His Worship the Mayor, assisted by Messrs C. C. Dacre (lion, sec), P. Whitaker, E. Logan, jun., and A. X. Lester. The ] first public performance takes place at the Foresters' Hall on December 19. New instruments at a cost of £200 have been ordered from London through Mr Eady, the whole of which money the committee expect to pay off in a short time. Several handsome subscriptions have already been promised by the residents. It is'the intention to add some 15 more instruments,, mostly reeds, and form it into a military band. The steamer Vivid will run an excursion to Riverhead to-morrow afternoon. ' . Captain Edwin advises for twentyfour hours from 9 a.m. to-day: — Moderate to strong north to west and south-west winds; glass fall:' tides :£oo"d; Indications for rain.
