MESSRS NATHAN'S SYLVIA PARK STUD.
A CEAND COLLECTION OF
YEAELINGS,
(By Hippona.)
In company with Mr L. D. Nathan and Mr J. Davis, I journeyed to Sylvia Park the other day to have a look over the j-earlings, which Mr Henry 0. Nolan submits to auction without reserve on Alonday,' December 31st, at 3 p.m., at Sylvia Park. A neatly gotup catalogue shows that a collection of thirteen will be submitted, and full particulars of the breeding of each, the winning strains, and performances of the family are given in extenso. After a careful inspection for some hours in the paddocks and box, I can say they are the best lot yet raised at Sylvia Pai-k, and they would do credit to any stud in this colony, or the Australian colonies; in fact, they are a particularly choice lot. During the present season horses; bred at Sylvia Park have been particularly successful. The winnings of produce of the mares and sires at the recent A-.R.0. Spring Meeting totalled £2145 out of the total stakes for the meeting, £3520. These figures speak for themselves. With regard to the colts, I have never seen a finer looking- yearling than a colt by Seaton Delaval—Miss Let.ty (a full brother to Beddington), Who is full of quality and substance. He is also built to carry weight, and his immense propelling power ought to stand him in good stead at the finish of many a hard-fought contest. All round he is beautifully shaped, and he is well grown, while his legs are of the best. When he is led round the sale ring next month I prophecy that he will realise a big price. He is bay in colour, with a white streak and two white, feet, A lengthy colt by Seaton Delaval—Campania (dam of Miss Delaval) is equally good-looking, and in point of conformation he is a ready-made galloper. He is, chestnut in colour. Hi,s legs are of th« best, and I have never seen such a free mover in the paddock. His great nrascular quarters enable him to get his hind legs well under him, and altogether he is the beau ideal of a great racehorse. A chestnut colt by Seaton Delaval out of Waitcmnta is a big-, determined fellow of the hardy wear and tear sort, and just one likely to turn out a great horse. Good judgrs will be pleased with him. Wait^mata is full sister to Eiridsdale, winner of the V.R.C. Essenden Stakes and other races at Flemington and Tasmania. She is one of the best-bred mares in the Sylvia Park stud, being a daughter of Eiridspord and Aorere, by Chester from Kaipara, by Goldsbrougli. The other colt, by St. Lfcger—Cantiniere, a full brother to Woodstock, is also very highly spoken of. A useful sort is the bay yearling colt by St. Leger — Cantiniere (by Musket). He possesses splendid galloping quarters, besides having the recommendation of beinga full brother to Woodstock. Among the nine fillies there is much for the critic to admire, the whole being a well-grown healthy lot without a blemish of any kind. Nothing finer could be wished for than a tremendous big filly sired by Seaton Delaval from Cbarente, a mare who has produced La Gloria, the laist Auckland Guineas winner, and the crack local two - year - old colt Nonjette. Her markings are a •white star, she being chestnut fin colour. A bay filly by Seaton Delaval—Liquidation is very attractive, and particularly well grown, while she possesses quarters strong1 enough for anything. She is also nice and close to the ground, and there is no mistaking her for one of the gems of
the collection. Jadesione's pledge of affection to St. Hippo is a filly possessing great quality and substance, which oug-ht to gallop fast and early. A chestnut by Seaton. Delaval —Leocant is a shapely lady with plenty of size to recommend her. Her dam has produced Paul Seaton, who is a speedy one. Another filly of commanding appearance is an all-bay, by Seaton Delaval from the highly-bred Miss Gladys, a daughter of Cuirassier and Sybil. Her only markings are a speck on the forehead. A filly by Seaton Delaval— Inndsfail is diminutive, and she promises not to be over pony height. She is nicknamed "Mosquito," and iv the daily runs she has in the paddock along with her companions she is always in the front rank, which speaks well for her pace in the future. Bragela was mated with Seaton Delaval last year, and the result is a well-grown, good-looking filly, bay in colour. She stand over a lot of ground, and is powerful-looking. One of the gems is a chestnut by Hotchkiss from Sybil, by Leolimits from Atlantis (imp.), dam of St. Leger. She is as full of good looks as one so bred and related might reasonably be expected to be, and I liked her syery much. She has a white blaze, down her face. The last of the fillies, sired. by St. Leger from Stepfeldt, by Nordenfeldt from Steppe (imp.), is a mass of symmetry, and quality, and altogether she is hard to fault. Stepfeldt herself was a. rare bit of horseflesh, and she Avon the Great Northern Derby of 1895 in gallant style. It will thus be seen from, my remarks that Seaton Delaval's progeny will be well represented at the next sale, and as he is a proved sire at getting high-class racehorses some high prices should be realised. His stock are g-etting bigger each year. The collection altogether are the best lot ever raised at Sylvia Park, and I hope to chronicle a record season for their breeders. The. outlook is certainly a promising one.
