THAMES.
At the meeting of the Thames County Council this evening a letter was read from Mr John Brown, who wrote on behalf of the mine owners of the Kapowai Block, Gumtown, asking the Council to assist in the formation of nine miles of road from Gumtown to the mines. Only a mile or so of the road would be in, the Thames County, and the County wouid get the revenue from the mines, which were situated within its boundaries. At Kapowai, said the writer, several mines were opening up very well, and from £1200 to £1300 had been spent on them. The owners now wished to convey battery machinery through to the mines. On the suggestion of Mr Dunlop (Chairman) it was agreed to get the engineer to report on the locality. A petition was read from a number of miners calling attention to the stale of the road between the Waiomo Beach and the Monowai mine. The matter was deferred pending fine weather. The Under-Secretary of the Lands and Survey Department notified the Council that the Government, in preparing the Estimates, would consider the proposed construction of a Thames River ferry at Turua. The Chairman stated that while in Wellington recently he had interviewed the Minister for Lands on the question of this ferry, and on the opening of the Piako lands. The Minister promised to visit the Thames and then consider the matter. At a meeting of the Thames Borough Council, held yesterday evening, conditions were adopted for the leasing of the borough endowment at Waitoa for 03 years, the upset rental for the first 21 years to be 1/ per acre per annum, and that for each 21 years thereafter the rent to be fixed by one or other of the modes provided in section 29 of the Public Bodies' Powers Act.
