HUNTLY.
The recent heavy rainfall has not improved the roads, that leading past the store of Messrs Friar, Davies and Co. to the goods shed being rather dangerous. A petition praying Parliament to bridge the Waikato at Huntly is being taken round, and is meeting with hearty support. Owing to the very inclement weather on Tuesday night the attendance at the social held in the Presbyterian Church, under the presidency of the Rev. Mr Ward, was very poor. The programme, arranged by Mr C. Starr, was a splendid one. Mrs S. James and Miss I. Johnston proved efficient accompanists. Appended is the programme:—Anthem, "Jesus of Nazareth," choir; solo, "River of Years,' Mr S. James; song, selected, Miss Troughear; solo, "He Wipes the Tear," MiMiles; song, "Death of Nelson," Mr F. James; comic reading, Rev. Mr Ward; quintette, "Sweet and Low," Messrs James (3), and Mr and Mrs Capstick; song, "Out on the Deep." Mr C. Starr; song, "Rocked in the Cradle of the Deep, Mr Valentine; song, "Sally in Our Alley," Mr F. James; anthem, "How Excellent," choir.
