j LONDON, September 2. Under Lord Roberts' instructions 30 Free Staters' farnis have been devastated with fire, and fifty other farmSirs have been fined one-eighth the Ta]_e of their holdings as'**a punishment for the raihvay raids.
Colonel Bethune has occupied Vrede, in the northeast of Orange Eiver colony.
Quantities of cattle, sheep and ammunition were captured in the vicinity of the town.
LONDON, September 1. Fifteen hundred Boers, with two guns, are at Maqualling's Nek. The British force at Ficksburg has been reinforced.
- -During the Boer attack on Winburg 'eight Capetown Volunteers sortied and occupied a donga at the rear of the Boers. When the Boers retired up the donga.in single file 28 were captured, including General Ollivier and his ,-. ions.
. Observing 200 more Boers approaching, the Capetowners fired with great rapidity, killing six. The rest fled. The prisoners were conveyed to camp. 9_he incident was a miniature of what •occurred at Saunas Post, when General Broadwood's column marched into an ambush.
