EVENTS IN SOUTH AFRICA.
On Thursday Mr F. G. Ewington delivered an instructive lecture at the .V.M.C.A. Rooms, under the ;adspiceS of the Ladles' Benevolent Society on
"Stirring Events In South Africa," Mr Ewington alluded to England's unpreparedness when the war broke out, and asserted that on 10th, Uth and -sth December last, when Generals Gatacre, Methuen and Buller were repulsed on those days, with a loss of 2486 men, England's national danger had never been so great since Trafalgar. But when Britain really awoke, and Canada, Australia; NeW Zealand, and the loyalists in th_ Cape and Natal rallied to the call of Motherland, the Victorious result was a foregone conclusion; and now all men desired peace, and that Boer and Briton may live together as brothers. On behalf of the Benevolent Society, Mr Ewington thanked Mr Philpott, Mr Musker, M_* Wallett and Miss Wallett for their valuable musical assistance. • .
