RESIDENCE SITES.

WAIHI, Friday.

At the adjourned meeting of the joint committees, elected to discuss the residence Bites question, which took place last evening In I'llling'B Hotel, the following resolutions were carried:—(l) "That the Government be called upon to send surveyors and consult with the lessors of the mineral rights, and select suitable lauds which should be surveyed into business and residence sites, a sufficient number of sites to be surveyed, pegged, and numbered showing on themap to be scon, at the loc*al po§c office.' (-) "Selectors to take their choice and pay a half-year's rent in advance." (.3) "That the rent be the same as at present existing.' These resolutions are contained In the Miners' Union scheme, with the exception of Clause 3 and a few other amendments in Clause 1. Clause 3 originally read, "That the annual rent be 4 per cent, -on the unimproved value of the land." "That the rate of 25 per cent, of all rents collected in the district affected be retained, to be paid into a Compensation Fund to compensate for resumptions where found necessary by the warden. The companies to pay 20 per cent, compensation on resumption, such sum to be retained until the fund reach £8000, and to be maintained,at that figure." "That all saleable Improvements be sold by public auction, the proceeds of .such sale to be paid Into the Compensation Fund." Mr J. B. Tailor considered that the annual rent of 10/ was quite sufficient to pay, and that the title should be a good and sound one. ' The mining companies were considered while the miner was ignored. He further thought the companies should be compelled to state before the " warden what amount of ground they needed for mining purposes.

Messrp Graliain and Kenaion also spoke to tills effect.

At this meeting Mr Di'umm was elected chairman anil Mr. Katz secretary, vice Messrs H. P. Barry aiid A. Y. Ross, resigned, respectively. Mr Scott conducted the proceedings.

A very pleasant evening party was held last. Wednesday in the Miners' Union Hall, the arrangements being supervised and carried out by a committee of ladies.
