NORTH TRUNK RAILWAY.
(By Telegraph.— Press Association.)
WELLINGTON, Monday.
Mr Blow, Under-Secretary for Public Works, who has just returned from a visit to the works on the/North, Island Trunk railway, reports •' tfiat very satisfactory progress is being made with the Mokohine viaduct, and with the formation, as far as Paengaroa, 26 miles beyond. The men employed on the bridge are engaged upon it from dawn till dusk, and as the days lengthen the progress of the structure will increase proportionately. This bridge will be much the highest in Australasia.' It is expected that the viaduct will.be completed within a year from date, and the cost is roughly estimated at £50,000. . In an editorial upon the subject of the North Island Main Trunk railway, the Timaru "Herald" of Saturday says: "No one in his senses can deny that the connection of Auckland .with Wellington by rail would be a very important step in the progress of the colony. The work is not one which would benefit Auckland alone, or Wellington alone, or even the North fe land alone."" The completion 6r the North Island Main Trunk'railway would give, a huge impetus to the trade and commerce of all New. Zealand. It would .greatly facilitate the carriage of the mails, arid there wotikl be an enormous expansion of passenger traffic along the whole route from Auckland to the Bluff/ The work "is, in, short, one of national importance, and ought from the first to have been regarded in' that light by the Centra': Government." < ~ '••■"."■':
