HOSPITAL AND CHARITABLE AID BOARD.
The following business was transacted at the meeting of the Auckland Hospital and Charitable Aid Board yesterday afternoon:— Hospital Cases.-The medical .superintendent of the Hospital reported that since last report there had been 7 deaths. At present there were 98 male and 36 female patients in the Hospital. A Costley Home Inmate.—On the motion of Mr Jamieson the Board decided to take no action for 12 months regarding the small contribution from the Foresters' Order to Andrew Mackte, of Helensville, who has been admitted to the Costley Home suffering from paralysis. The Lodge contribution will therefore go to the patient's wife. Operations.—Mr A. P. Friend said there had been a large percentage of deaths from operations in the Hospital. He mentioned one case in particular, and said he would like to see.a report on the matter from the medical adviser.—Several members deprecated making much of such statements before they gathered evidence on the subject.—lt was resolved,, on Mr Friend's motion, to get a report on the case from the honorary medical adviser.— It was resolved, also, on Mr Friend's motion, to get a return prepared dealing with all operations in the Hospital. , Costley Home.—The manager of the Costley Home reported that there were at date 128 men and 43 women in the Home. There was one inmate of the maternity ward. The admissions since last meeting were 6 men and 3 women, which balanced the deaths and departures. , ,
Insurance. —On the Initiative of Mr R. Salmon it was resolved that It was right that the employees of the Board should be Insured, and it was decided to ask the two accident insurance companies to send in particulars. ■
Contageous Disease.—A long discussion took place regarding the treatment of cases of contagious disease in the Auckland Hospital. The matter was Tarought up as the result of communications from the Women's Christian Temperance Union and the Women's Political League asking that provision be made for treating women suffering from this disease the same as men were being treated, so that there should be no special treatment for men. A report; from the Hospital stated that during the year ended last month 13 cases of venereal disease (12 men and 1 woman) had been treated at the Hbspital. One of the cases was a boy of 7 and- another a boy of 8. Mr Friend moved, and Mr Salmon seconded: "That the W.C.T.U. and Women's Political League be informed In reply that the Board has made enquiry amd finds that during the past year 10 men (5 of whom were seamen and homeless), two boys and one woman \ were treated at the Hospital for contagious disease, and that the Board sees no reason for the statements made." Mr Friend's motion was carried. Mr R. Tudehope moved: "That it be an instruction to our medical superintendent that no such case be admitted to the Hospital in future.", Mr Tudehope's motion was carried and the discussion ended.
