SCENERY CONSERVATION SOCIETY.
A meeting of the Auckland Scenery Conservation Society was held yesterday afternoon In the Municipal Buildings, Dr. l'urchas presiding. There were ulso present Professor Thomas, Messrs J. Bunt, D. Hay, J. W. Tibbs, E. A. Mackechnie, K. W. Payton, W. J. Courtney, W. Berry, F. Holt, J. Cheesema'n, and F. T. "Ward. Domain.—Ke the cutting down of trees In the Domain, the Town Clerk wrote saying that the matter had been referred to the Superintendent of Parks to confer /with Cr. Itlslgnatlon.-Dr. J. L. Campbell wrote regretting that owing to Increasing age aud infirmities he would no longer be abie to preside at the Society's ineetlngs.-The resignation was accepted with regret. Tree-planting.—The report of the sudcomm'ttee on tree-planting was presented. This showed that the suD-comuiUtee had considered Mr Kenneth Watkins' proposals for the prevention of bush tires. Air Watkins proposed legislative action in this respect that no burning be allowed after the Slst of October or before the Ist May in. each year. The committee, however, sees practical difficulties In the way o£ sud-h proposals, and advocates as a remedy tlie education of the country public as to the beauties' of nature and the "necessity ot preserving bush.—Professor Thomas Instanced the case of a settler at Waltakerei, who, after warning, carelessly burnt Uown v kauri tree which was intended to be preserved as the property of the people. He thought that the Society should prosecute in such cases.-Mr Allom suggested the appointment of rangers for country districts. -It was ultimately decided to ask the City Council to. appoint a ranger for the kauri forest—The same committee reported that Mr Beehan's letter suggesting the conservation of the Cemetery Gully .scenery aud the improvement of the locality as a recreation ground had been considered, and that the committee reported that they considered thTplaee would never be used for recreation purposes. Good work might be done, however, to. conserving its scenery.-Ke-port adopted. The Railway Wharf Road:-The same committee reported that the road to the Railway Wharf and Freezing Works is dangerous and inconvenie-nt to the public, and that a more direct approach to the wharf and a traffic bridge over the railway are requlred.-Some discussion took place as to whether the maintenance and order of roads was part of the duty of the Society. Ultimately the report was referred to the City' Council. ' .. Jervois Road.-It was resolved that the Council's donation to the cost of planting Jervois Road be £10 if necessary. Resignations.—The resignations of Mr P. Dlgnaa and Professor Brown as members of the committee were received. It was decided to fill the vacancies at the next meet'ng.
