NEWMARKET.
The ordinary meeting of the Newmarket Borough Council was held lnst evening, there being present Ml' John McColl (Mayor) and Crs. w. Edgerley, A. Seccombe, J. M. Laxou, J. R. Casto-n, I<\ Bennett, George Smerdon, and C. G. Laurie.
Park Avenue.—Cr. Bennett drew attention to the flooded state pf Park Avenue, Glasgow Terrace, and surrounding streets yesterday. The pipes would not curry the great volume of water which fell, and a lot of properties were over-run with water. Rhyber Pass Road.—On the motion of Cr. Be>nnett It was agreed that 100 feet of Khyber Pass Road be channelled with concrete and stone.
Gas Lamp.—The Secretary of the Gas Company wrote that it hail been decided to lay the necessary inaiu for the supply of a lamp at the corner of Eden and Bourke streets.—The Council thought this was satisfactory. Osborne-street.—Mr A. McNeill wrote complaining of the bad state of the street at the rear of his premises in Osbonne-street. He also drew intention to the present unsatisfactory state of the nightsoil contract. —Cr. Smerdon said there were general complaints In the borough about the present great delay in the ulghtsoil contract. The old contractor certainly did not linish up his contract as he should have done.—The Town Clerk suld Mr Burke was anxious to do the work well. He had only recently taken it over, and he would duly intimate the streets he Intended visiting ou different nights.—lt was agreed on the motion of Cr. Snierdon that the remarks of the Council be conveyed to Mr, Burke by- the Town Clerk.
Newmarket Hall.—Attention was called by the Town Clerk to the bad state of t,he interior and walls of the Newmarket Hall, and also the floor.—The matter was referred to the Hall Committee.—lt was also agreed on the motion of Cr. 'Smerdon thar the rates of letting to the Druids and others be considered.
Electric Tramways.—Messrs Hesketh and Richmond, solicitors, forwarded the deed of delegation us altered tlnd settled witli Mr \V. O. liingluun's representatives. A supplementary agreement to be executed by the Council and Mr Btagharn was also forwarded, so that the necessary Order-in-Counell could be applied ,for. They asked that the supplementary agreement be executed ami sealed In the usual wuy by the Council.—On the motion of the Mayor, Crs. Bennett, Laxon, and the mover were empowered to sign the agreement and attach the seal, final arrangements being left in the hands of the borough solicitors.—The Mayor said there would be a penny sectional fare from Hancock's to the Junction Hotel, and from Newmarket to Bishop'seourt for one penny, or to town via Parnell for twopence. Borough Refuse.—Mr Laxon moved, "That tenders be called for the removal of refuse from the borough," and called attention to the existing nuisance^-caused by the utilising as a tip of the fire brigade reserve in the borough.—lt was resolved to call for tenders at once.
Vacancies.—lt was decided to hold a special meeting on Monday evening next to revise tbe burgess list.—The Town Clerk mentioned that Messrs Laxon, Luinpl*lu, and Rose were the three retiring members of the Council.
