TE AROHA, Friday.
The local butchers announce that, owing to tho increased price paid for cattle, they are compelled to raise the price of meat.
On Wednesday evening Mr VV. H. Smith, of Auckland, delivered an interesting- address in the Wesleyan Church on his tour round the world, Including China and Japan.
The Manawaru Creamery has commenced operations. The first day's supply waa just over 100 gallons of milk from'G suppliers. Mr Whltburn is in charge. The supply anticipated this season Is promising; four now suppliers are coming, which means an increase of, say, 150 extra cows. Shaftesbury Bridge Is now completed and open for traffic, and settlers on either side of the river realise the great convenience. It ia to them. General satisfaction has been expressed at the manner in which tho contractors (Messrs James Bros.) carried out tholr work. The bridge is 210 feet long and cost £540, including £50 for approaches. The amount of cutting and filling ia 800 feet. The bridge consists of seven 30 feet, spans, the piles are totara, and tho super-structure is composed of kauri and rlmu. Height of bridge when river is low is 18 feet from water. Tho amount of earth taken og\ of cutting and carried across the bridge was about 2000 yards, which was used to form a road across the swamp. Settlement in the neighbourhood ia going- ahead, tho country round about being dotted with comfortable homesteads.
