OHINEMURI ABATTOIRS.
PAEROA, this day,
These abattoirs have been working since January Ist, and have proved an unqualified success, although a few of the butchers have been dissatisfied, as they have, they consider, been at somewhat more expense than when each butcher had his own slaughter-yard. However, as the total cost In connection with the killing, inspection, etc., is only one-tenth of a penny per pound at the outside, such complaints are groundless: At the meeting of the County Council on Thursday last the County Inspector referred to an article which had appeared In the Karangahake paper condemning these charges, and the Inspector quoted the charges made at Auckland, Thames, Wanganui, Wellington, and Dunedln, showing that the charges made here compare most fa-
vourably with what Is charged at those places. Tlie inspection, fees are fixed by .statute, and are 3d for large beasts and id for small. During the six months about 12 beasts had been' condemned as unfit for human food, and in each case precautions were taken to prevent the meat being used. Had it not been for the abattoirs other diseased nifimals would have been slaughtered, but under the old system no butcher ever destroyed the carcase of a diseased beast, and consequently suffered no loss; hence, in tlie Inspector's opinion, the objection some people have to (lie abattoirs. The County Council unault/inusi.v passed a resolution that the charges for killing at the abattoirs are faii' and reasonable.
