FUNERAL OF MAJOR HAMLET
The funeral of the late Major E. Hamlin (whose death is rieferred to elsewhere in this issue) took place this afternoon at St. Marks Ohurc hyard, Remuera. The. deceased officer having been an old volunteer and a soldier who had seen service in the war days, • he was, accorded military horours. at his interment. Some of the Auckland volvmteer garrison attended the funeral,' but the number -was unfortu1- k nately very small, owing to the shortness of notice and the distance of the place of interment. Captain J. R&d (Distfict Adjutant) was in charge.of; the parade, and the other member of-jjj the Permanent Staff present was Ser-.f geant-Major' Hoar. Lieut. Markham (Adjutant No. 1 Battalion) was also present. Lieut-Col. Banks, OfficerCommanding the District, could not tatend, being absent'at Whangarei. A* few files of volunteers, members 6f var-t7 ious garrison corps, attended. Therfe^ was a good muster of the Garrison: Band, under Bandmaster Hunter. One .of the "A" Battery's nine^pounder field gun's was taken, out to Remuera in. charge of Sergeant-Major Hazard, and the remains of the deceased officer, covered with the Union Jack, were borne on the gun-carriage to their last resting place. , * The band and volunteers went out by train to Newmarket, and thepc'e marched up to the deceased's late-resi-dence, .whence they escorted.the funeral procession to the grave-yard, the band playing "The Dead March." ijt "Saul."
