AFTER THE WAR.
A FINAL CELEBRATION
The other day Mr A. Kidd, ActingMayor, telegraphed to the Hon. J. G. Ward suggesting that the Government should proclaim a, public holiday throughout the colony for public rejoicing when the British army enters Pretoria. The' Acting-Premier wires the following reply from Invercargill: "Mayor of Auckland.—The recent developments in South Africa amount to the early possibility of peace being declared, and in order to prevent any independent action 'in different portions of the colony, and for the purpose' of having a. general recognition in the colony of such an important event I desire to inform you that the Government has decided that a general ■holiday shall be proclaimed a few days after the declaration of peace has been made, and thus enable people throughout the colony to arrange for fitting final celebration to mark an event of such vast importance to the Empire. As you occupy a representative position I feel that it is necessary you should know what is contemplated -and I am sure you will recognise that uniformity of action throughout .New Zealand on a day to be arranged is desirable. I will advise you of the. date fixed for the celebration as soon _l possible after the news of the declaration of peace comes to hand.. No doubt citizens in both city and suburbs will act on the Acting-Pre-mier's suggestion and make a great final display. Scire firms intend * luminating their premises.
