(From Our Own Correspondent.)
PAEROA, this day
The development, of the branch reef recently discovered in the No. 4 level from No. 1 shaft of the Golden Cross section has been vigorously prosecuted .luring the month with satisfactory results, and a commencement has now been made to open it up at No. 3 level. At this level it has been driven on 27 feet and shows a. body of good payable stone five feet wide. At No. 4 level the drive is now in 109 feet, and the reef maintains its width of five feet and its quality of high-grade ore. The rise which was started at 47 feet in from the junction of the branch reef and the main reef is up 43 feet, and the ore body is here also five feein width and of high grade. The exploiting of this important reef at No. 2 level will shortly be undertaken, so that in a short time the company will have a highly valuable auxiliary supply of ore in readiness for their battery. The management are to be congratulated oh the highly satisfactory discovery of this reef. At No. 1 shaft no driving- 'has been done at No. 5 level, as the manager has been busy lowering the water from No. 4 level to get down to No. 5 level. This the pump is slowly doing, the water now being 31 feet below No. 4 level. The No. 4 level cross-cut at No. 2 shaft is now in 153 feet, but without anything of importance to The low level tunnel has been driven 80 feet during the.month, making a total distance driven of 2277 feet. At the Te-ao-marama section crc^ss-cutting west at No. 3 level has been continued, the drive being now in 41 feet from the shaftr chamber. A reef has been passed through and this will be thoroughly exploited when the . cross-cut has been continued a little further. A cross-cut to the east from the shaft chamber has also been started,, and is in eight feet. The low level tunnel at the Komata side is now in 1339 feet. At the old Waitekauri section the-work in hand has been the continj nation of the intermediate? level south ! from a point 43 feet above the smithy 'level, and also the continuation of the side drive at the Queen level, north from No. 2 rise. There is no change to report from either of these points.
