CHARGE OF FRAUD.

WELLINGTON, Sunday.
' At the Supreme Court last night the fcharge against Harry . Albert Evers■Jeigh,. formerly clerk in the Government Roads and Survey Department, of falsifying books with intent to deiraud, was concluded after two days' hearing.. Accused had control of the imprest account, and it was alleged ithat certain moneys received between 1597 anA .1899, amounting to £412, were not'accounted for. The jury returned a verdict of guilty, and prisoner was remanded for sentence. Other charges of theft were withdrawn.

Eyersleigh applied for probation, but Sir E. Stout refused, saying probation was not meant for such cases, and sentenced accused' to eighteen jnonths' imprisonment.
