Drunkenness—For this offence Robert Cecil BingTey was fined 5/, or 24 hours hard labour, and Mary Hamilton and Mary Brown were convicted and discharged. Five first offenders were also discharged with a caution.
ThefWEdward Putland, 12 years of age, who pleaded guilty on Saturday to two charges of stealing brass taps from a stall in the City Market, came up for sentence. The Magistrate discharged him upon the father entering into a bond of £10 for the boy's good behaviour in future. Detective Grace mentioned that the, boy had sold the taps to another dealer in the Market for 4d, and stated that the latter would be dealt with in due course. Larrikinism in Ponsonby.—-Ernest Saxon and Eobert # Phillips, two youths, pleaded not guilty to # a charge of having assaulted Clive Jenkins at Ponsonby. Sub-Inspector Wilson prosecuted. James Preston, grocer, Jervois Eoad, stated that on the evening of May 18th he saw a crowd of youths outside his shop, the two accused amongst them. Witness aske dthem to go away and not make a noise. Phillips refused to go away and Saxon said: "Come on, it's not a boy you have to deal with." Witness called his assistant, Jenkins. When the latter stepped out of the shop Saxon rushed at him and struck him in the face. Phillips joined in the assault. Witness had a great deal of trouble with larrikins; they were a regular pest night after night, and only went away when the policeman came along. The two accused belonged to the gang. Clive Jenkins o-ave corroborative evidence, but added that he had not previously seen Saxon with the gang. Constable Brown said Phillips did not bear the best of characters; he had not heard any complaint about Saxon. Phillips in evidence denied striking Jenkins. Saxon's brother and father also gave evidence for the defence. His Worship said he did not attach much importance to the assault itself, but the case was serious as showing that accused belonged to a gang o£ roughs who made life unbearable to residents of the district. Each accused was fined £2 and costs.
