UNIVERSITY COLLEGE COUNCIL.

The ordinary meeting of the University College Council was held yesterday afternoon in the College buildings. Present: Sir G. M. O'llorke (in the chair), Bishop Cowie, Rev. W. J. Williams, Messrs R. Hobbs, G. Peacocke, F. E. Baume, the Hon. J. A. Tole, and ' His Worship the Majror (Mr D. Goldie). Resignation.—The resignation of Mr C. T. Major, M.A., B.Sc, graduates' member on the Council, was l'eceived. Mr Major proceeds to South Africa with the Fifth Contingent. The Chairman proposed the following motion, which was carried unanimously: "That the Council of the Auckland University College regrets the resignation of Mr Charles T. Major, M.A., B.Sc, of his seat on the Council, to which he has been three times elected by the graduates of the New Zealand University, but whilst expressing this regret the Council at the same time desires to congratulate Mr Major on being appointed to the command of a company of the Fifth Contingent now about to embark for the war in South Africa. The Council feels sure, that Capt. Major will discharge his military duties with zeal, energy and efficiency, and hopes at no distant date to welcome him back to New Zealand." The Late Professor Schmitt. —On the motion of the Chairman the following motion was carried: "That the Council record on their minutes an expression of their regret for the death of HerrCarl Schmitt, who for eleven years had been lecturer on music in this College, and the Council desire to express their condolence with tthe widow and family of Herr Schmitt in their bereavement, and instruct the Registrar to forward a copy of this resolution to Madame Schmitt." The Hon. J. A. Tole, in seconding the motion, said he felt he had lost a personal friend for whom he held the highest esteem and affectionate regard. The College had lost a professor, and the public an eminent 7nusician, who had advanced music m Auckland probably more than any person and whose vacant place could not be readily filled. Professor Schmitt loved his art, and promoted it by the untiring devotion of his talents to it. The motion was a proper one, and he (Mr Tole) joined heartily, though regretfully, in the. expressions of condolence to Madam Schmitt and family. Smoking in Common Room.—Mr F. E Baume moved "That the resolution Of the Council prohibiting smoking m the common room be rescinded. Some discussion ensued on the motion which was finally lost.

Ejection,.—The Registrar war, instructed to hold an election t» All the vacancy on the Council catised by the resignation of Captain Major. Christian Union.—The Secretary of the Students' Christian Union wrote requesting the. use of a lecture room in which to hold meetings. The Registrar was instructed to arrange with the Union as to the time of meeting, 6 Waitemata Reserve.—lt was decided to ask the Crown Lands Commissioner to instruct the Ranger to report on the value of above reserve, Aranmu, Kai-Assistant.-The Registrar announced that Professor Thomas' assistant was proceeding to England Professor Thomas was given power to appoint a successor from the list of applicants. Finance.—Accounts to the amount of £537 7/6 were passed for payment.
