LIBERAL ASSOCIATION.

ME HOLLAND'S CANDIDATURE

SUPPORTED

A meeting of the Auckland Liberal Association was held last evening in the Wesley Hall. Dr. Me Arthur presided. Between 50 and GO were present. The first business of the evening I was the forming of the Association j into a general committee to secure | the return of Mr J. J. Holland at the | bye-election. ! Messrs Cheal, Beehan, Jordan, S. ; Reid, and Dr. McArthur urged upon ! the meeting the necessity of relaxing jno efforts, as doubtless the contest ; would be a keen one. : Mr Holland, who was present, re;turned thanks for the confidence rei posed in him. lie assured the Association that if returned he would renew his efforts to secure full justice for Auckland, more especially in reference to retaining Auckland as the port of call for the 'Frisco service, pushing forward the construction of the Main Trunk line, also the Stratford railway route to Auckland. The Association then agreed to affiliate by 20 to G to the Liberal and Labour Federation of New Zealand, the headquarters of which are ;tt Wellington under the presidency of the Premier.

During- a discussion on the question of affiliation Messrs Dixon and King twitted Mr Beehan with inconsistency. It was pointed out that formerly he had been an opponent of such affiliation. Mr Beehan retorted that on the previous occasion he had objected to the method in which the subject was presented.

The chairman at this stage declared the discussion closed.

A committee was then formed to further Mr Holland's candidature.

On the motion of Mr Beehan, seconded by Mr Dixon, Dr. McArthur was appointed president of the

Liberal Association. In accepting the position Dr. McArthur outlined the course lie intended to pursue at the regular meetings of the Association. He would read short papers at each meeting- on the Labour and. Land Laws of the colony, together with any other matters of interest which cropped up from time to time.
