THE FIFTH CONTINGENT.
Dr. King- volunteered his services ns a medical officer for the Fifth Contingent, but last evening lie received a reply from Wellington sttltiiTg1 that all the vacancies had been filled. The troopers of The contingent re- \ maining in camp at Hpsom (number- j in^- about sixty) will leave for Wellington to-morrow by the s.s. Mapourikn from Onehunga, under Capt. IMnjor and Lieut; Potter. Last evening a ballot was taken at the Epsom Camp in order to fill up the twelve vacancies in the Auckland troop. There were about 50 men present. About 30 had been favourable
reported on as the result of the shooting' tests, and these went to the ballot. The following- twelve were the successful men. who drew the papers marked

Lieut.-Colonel Ranks, who conducted the. ballot, then selected the following as emergency men. and ordered them to hold themselves in ref-erv: 0. Hunler, V. Saunders, 11. Nesbitt, .1. Appleton, .1. Nicholas. V. ... Andrew, G. Dig-nan. 0. SchcrtY, and 11. Lawrence. Capt."Triuglc and Lieut. \V. Ross have left for Dunedin to join the Fourth Contingent.
Captain Davles has been promoted to the rank of .Major commanding 1200 of the Fourth Contingent. Lieut. Colonel Kommerville goes to South Africa in charge of the Fourth Contingent, and if hostilities are still proceeding will take it to the front and hand it over to Capt. Davies. The cattle trucks bringing down the horses last night bore in large letters the device. "For Pretoria."
Colonel Newall lakes command of the Fifth Contingent to the front. Captain Lomax of Wanganui applied for the post of adjutant to Col. Newall. Capt. Loinax is Captain and Adjutant of the West Coast Battalion. He has been an enthusiastic volunteer for fifteen years, and is well experienced in mounted work.
