DRIVING THE BOERS
BACK
A DETERMINED STRUGGLE.

LONDON, March 19
In driving the Boers back to their main trenches the garrison of Mafeking used grenades preparatory to the bayonet attack.
The shells from the home-made gun constructed by the garrison cannot be fired with precision, and the erratic ehelling of the gun proved bewildering to the enemy. The Baralongs have been armed in order to defend their own enclosure. LONDON, March 18. Lord Methuen was at Warrenton on the 17th inst., and prevented the Boers from destroyinfg a deviation bridge and secured the punt over the Vaal River. Colonel Plumerwas at l.tsani on the 13th, and reconnoitred Eamathla- . ama. Desperate sapping and counter-sap-ping is proceeding at Mafeking, the Boers being driven to their main lines of investment.
Colonel Baden-Powell was hopeful on ■the 12th.
