NEWMARKET.
The ordinary meeting of the Newmarket Borough Council was held last evening*, there being in attendance, Mr J. McColl (the Mayor), and Crs. .). M. Laxon, j. R. Caston, J: Lmnpkins, F. Bennett, W. Edgerley, aud A. Seccombe. Cr. Smerdon forwarded a letter of apology for non-attendance, Huntly Avenue. —Mr F. A. White asked for permission to put a road right through his property from Carlton Gore Eoad to Khyber Pass Road. !lA right of way had been previously granted the applicant.—The Mayor i said it was only completing* a former ■ arrangement entered into by the Coun- •' cil with Mr White.—Cr. Laxon thought • i the original plan of the proposed new i road should be submitted to the CounI cil at the next meeting, and he moved . accordingly. This was agreed to, the ; Streets Committee tilso to visit the i property. —Mr White, who was pre- > j sent, reminded the Council That he .[did not wish to interfere in any way • with his previous off er to the Council, iHe would carry out all the proposals. Permit. —Permission was given Mr Edgerley to remove a small building ' from Hancock's brewery, Khyber Pass, 5 to Epsom. - I ' Resignation.—Mr .V. B. Booth wrote > in consequence of the Council having . refused to pay him the current rate of carters wages he would tender his rej signation. He pointed out the Council . had also imposed the extra duty of . lighting and extinguishing the lamp. —The resignation was received, and it ; was agreed to invite applications by r advertisement for the position. 1 Hobson's Bay. —The Mayor and members of the. Streets Committee j were appointed a committee to meet j in conference the City and Parnell Councils, and Remuera and Mt. Eden . Road Boards, to adopt measures to . abate the nuisance existing in Hob- [ son's Bay caused by drainage from the ) above bodies being diverted into Bat-
kin's Creek, and thence flowing into the bay.
Drainage.—Cr. Bennett presented a report from the Streets Committee regarding the drainage of certain properties in Eden and Loui'ke-streets. lie proposed. '"That the Footpath and channel be .formed in Eden-street for the purpose of taking- the surface .vjiter away." This was curried unanmously. It was also decided to take teps for the closing- down of the cesstit at the corner opposite the Jubilee .iotel.
