LONDON MISSIONARY SOCIETY.

& I The annual meeting1 of. the Auckland Auxiliary of the above Society was held in the Beresford-st Church on Wednesday evening, Rev. h\ Warner occupied the chair, and briefly introduced Airs Dr. Howard-Taylor, C.X.M., and the Rev. Hudson Taylor, M.E.C.S., if.G.S. (founder of the China inland Mission. The Rev. Hudson Taylor, in the i : course of a most interesting address, referred to the great work which the i China Inland and other societies had accomplished. Some idea of the extent of this work may be gathered from the fact that when he landed in j China 30 years ago there were only , 300 converts; there were now not less , than 100,000 communicants, and the j gain in converts was about 10,000 per j year in connection with Protestant j j missions. There was not one province : in China without its mission staff, and j each mission had its converts. There j were so many coming forward, in fact, j for religious teaching that it was embarrassing to know how to instruct them all. He referred to the excellent work done by the late Dr. Medhurst in the interest of the missionary movement in China. He had also been privileged to know Dr. Griffith John, whom he eulogised most highly. The address was much appreciated by the large number .present. A collection on behalf of the Society was then taken up. •Mrs Dr. Taylor said she had much to relate of the lives and good work of the missionaries working for the Society. She made an earnest appeal to those present for monetary aid, _to enable the missionary work in China tobe carried on. She urged all to see that they took a share in the work of dispersing- the dark shadow oi' heathenism in China.- The Chinese were all spiritualists, and devil worshippers, and they were often oppressed by the power of evil spirits. But a mightier Power was helping the work of. the Society, and was gradually having its effect. A vote of thanks being accorded the speakers for their address, the meeting closed with' the singing of the Doxology. At a business'meeting, held earlier in the evening, the Secretary's report and balance-sheet was read as follows:—The past year has been a quiet one in regard to interest in the work of the Societ\ r. The committee has met twice during the year. At the first meeting- the question of the proposed Australasian Auxiliary was discussed with Mr King, and it was resolved to recommend its adoption at the annual meeting. We were glad to have Captain and Mrs Nore as deputations this year, but the meetings, on the whole, were not so successful as usual, with the exception of the lames' meeting-, which was a very good one. Mrs Bull has undertaken the secretaryship of the Watchers' Band, and is endeavouring to increase the membership. The receipts for the year amounted to £ 114 1/9 (which showed a falling off. from previous year),made tip as follows:—Widow and orphan fund, £2 13/9; general fund, £69 19/ li; s.s. John Williams' hands, £22 3/10?,; magazine account, £4 5/; Miss TTarband's salary, £10. Total expenditure amounted to .€3 18/. leaving a balance of £110 3/9 handed to the Treasurer.
