RLXTY-THTIEE CASES AND FIFTY-
rOUli DEATHS
The Alameda, which left Honolulu on February 2S, brings news that lip to that dale (W cases of plague had occurred in the city, and of these 5i proved fatal. The great majority of these were natives, Chinese, or Japanese, but .there were several whites among- the number. No fresh cases had been reported since the 22rid, and twelve days had elapsed before that without a ease being- discovered. Ttt citizens burned down ail infected buildings, several millions of dollars ■worth of property being- destroyed in this manner. The streets were being sprinkled with diluted sulphuric acid in order to prevent infection by dust.
The disease was not confined to one portion of the city, but broke out in different quarters.
The harbour was full of -shipping, tihere being- over .fifty vessels anchored in the stream.
The Alaraeda. had no direct pornlnmi'eation wiili the shore. She landed passengers, cargo and mails, these hitler being- transferred by the vessel's crew into lighters, which were disinfected "before being- broughtalongside. She took no cargo or passengers from Honolulu, but brought a" mail, which was fumigated before being- taken aboard. The Alamerta took eoiid aboard at HO'iiiolulu, the crew doing the work.
The on [.ward 'Frisco mail steamer Moana, <lue from Sydney on Sunday next, Avill auclhor in the stream, and her mails and passeng-ers. Avill be taken oIV in a. ferry steamier.' She ■will not land passengers, here.
