NEW ZEALAND PRECAUTIONS.
UNSATISFACTORY
REPLY FROM
VICTORIA
(Ey Telegraph.—Press Association.)
WELLINGTON, tins day
The following- telegrams have passed between the Premier of New Zealand and the Premier of. Victoria: —
The latter wired: "Be plague this Government not yet instituted medical inspection of passengers by the border of New South Wales, and having" as yet no cases of plague in Victoria we have not as yet instituted examination of passengers by steamers to New Zealand."
To this Mr Seddon replied: "Latest telegrams show bubonic plague, spreading in Sydney. Sorry to hear your Government taking no s-teps in respect ot passengers by rail coming from Sydney to Victoria, and thence by-steamer to New Zealand. We have every desire to be neighbourly, and hesitate to declare Victoria an infected district, seeing no case has developed in your colony; but it is no use our quarantining' boats from Sydney if passengers from Sydney simply go by rail to Melbourne, and then take steamer to New Zealand. If passengers shipping by New Zealand steamers at your ports were immediately examined it would mitigate the risk. Am I to understand that Victoria intends to take no action? Qur Board 'of Health has recommended that your colony be declared infected, seeing that there is no restriction on passengers by land from Sydney to Victoria. Why not help xis by taking steps to examine passengers crossing the border or to medically examine passengers prior to departure for New Zealand? Reply urgent."
