SINGULAR FATALITY.

DUNEDIN, Tuesday
A death under somewhat singular circumstances occurred at St. Cla.ii' Beach yesterday afternoon. John Heartier, a seaman, was seen to undress opposite the Esplanade and go inlo Ihe water. He rolled about amongst the surf and then stood up. He was seen apparently to fall down and the rollers carried him out to the beach. When examined life was
not extinct, but before Dr. Waft could arrive from Fortmrv camp the man was dead. He had been employed lately as night watchman on 'the steamer Rirnu, and had been drinking somewhat heavily.
DUNEDIX, this day
At the inquest on Hartley the jury returned a verdict of accidental death. Deceased, who has been in the colony only \:i months, was a strong- and splendid swimmer, but was liable to take cramp.
