THE FIFTH CONTINGENT.
(To the Editor.. I Sir,—l see in jour issue of the 9th j ultimo that pressure is to be brought to bear upon the Government &to I sanction the sending of southern portion of fifth contingent to Auckland that Auckland may be the port of departure of New Zealand's fifth, and we hope our last, contribution of men to_ the war in Son th Africa. I cer-; tainly hope the Government will do' nothing of the kind even if it is so : weak-kneed so far as to give its con- j sent. The commander of our forces ought to veto such a move. We are at war; let everything done by us be j done in a warlike manner, as direct as possible. The time is not fitting ' for the parading of our men from town to town as a sort of military show. Let us drop this sort of thing. The sending of men . from Invercar- « gill to Auckland that we may look upon and then send them nearly back again, covering a distance of fully 1600 miles extra, would be absurdity in itself; a waste of energy as well as money.—l am, etc., JAS. B. GASCOIGNE.
