RECEPTION OF AUCKLAND.

ATHLETIC TEAM.

- The Auckland repres.entafcivesjMessri 9 G. Smith, Laurie, .Dickey and Madill!, who so worthily" upheld the province at the N.Z. Amateur Athletic Association Meeting, held at Wellington on Saturday last," arrived by the Mapourika this morning. They were met by several members of the Auckland Club and heartily congratulated on their success in securing and placing the banner to Auckland's credit. Geo. Smith, the hero: of the: team, particularly came in for congratulation. They were driven in' from Onehunga by road, the banner'floating'to the light breeze.' At the rooms'of'the Amateur Sports Club at mklday to-day the members of the victorious Auckland Athletic team who have just returned from Wellington, were formally welcomed by the local athletic authorities. Mr C. E. Macormiek presided, and' there was a fair attendance. Mr.G. E. .Macormiels in welcoming the-team apologised for. the absence of the president, ifc heartily congratulated the members on. their success, and said it was an vi.--equalled performance for a team.- of four men to win the banner. He cai* led special attention to.the fine performance of Smith, who had won foup eyenls'in the one afternoon. lie 1 herefore asked the company to.drink tha health of the team, which v/as heartily done.

Mr G.-Smith, in reply 'thanked tftS president for his good wishes, and said he v/as proud to be manager o{ such a feom, Of his own performances he was equally proud. He. wished lo thank tho Wellington, and Dunedin' authorities for their splendid treaP ment of the team, and he wished'to say that the meeting had been got up] splendidly. ■' • • ■ , .
