SCENERY CONSERVATION SOCIETY.
I Yesterday afternoon a meeting' ot ' the committee of the Auckland Scenery Conservation Society was held in the Mayor's room, City Council Chambers. Dr. J. L. Campbell presided in the absence of the Mayqt. Mr Cheeselniui acted as secretary pro tein. in the absence oii Mr A. J. Allom on a holiday. Leave of absence was granted ito Prof. A .P. W- Thomas and Mr Morton.
Domain. —The Secretary (Mr A. J. Allom), in his report, mentioned that Mr Holt suggested some time ago that the imported trees which \vere growing amongst the native vegeta-
tion in the Auckland Domain should be removed. Portions of the Domain should be exclusively devoted to native trees and plants, puriri, rimn, totara. poliutukawa, kahikatea and ot'hur trees were capable of being1 transplanted, and the Domain could be made the scene of very interesting
experiments in timber growing', ami Ihe native bush in the Domain should be carefully preserved for the benefit of future generations, ft was stated thai the pines and poplars were doing1 considerable harm to th« native trees in the bush portion of the Domain, it was stated that the question was under, consideration by the Domain Committee of the society.
Trees in the Streets.—Tt. was resolved on the motion of Mr Holt, "That, in order to avoid the necessity for mutilating" the trees in the streets and roods about this district in order to clear the telegraph "wires, the Commissioner of Telegraphs be requested to have the telegraph and telephone wires bound in cables, instead of suspended naked, in all streets and roads where rows of trees are growing, and that this request be sent through the officer in charge in Auckland, and that he be asked to give it his support." Nihotapu Falls.—Tt was resolved to vote -G2 from the society's funds for n trnck down to the font of Nihotapu Falls, so as to enable ladies and others to visit the locality more easily.
Mount F.den.—A proposal was brought forward to erect n kiosk at the trig station on the top of Mount Eden, but Dr. J. L. Campbell and others condemned the proposal as being quite opposed to the objects of the society. The matter was accordingly allowed to dron.
Symond-street Cemeteries. — Mr ("1 raves Aiekin referred to the discreditable state of the cemeteries In Symonds-street, and said no place required more attention from the society and the people of Auckland. The Presbyterian Cemetery was in the worst condition and was quite neglected. The Inrffe trees, such as pines, etc., in the cemetery should not be there. Cemeteries should he kept in the best of order. The society should lose no time in talcitip this matter up. and the City Council should be asked to take steps to put the cemeteries in proper order. The sub-committee, consisting of Dr. Campbell, l?cv. Mr Beattie. and Mr Aiekin, were appointed to confer with a committee of the City Council and inquire into the matter in order to ascertain in what direction improvements could be offeoted.
