NEWMARKET V. 'WELLINGTON. A SPLENDID GAME. Yesterday afternoon, at the Eenruera Green, the third and fourth rounds of the Stewart Dawson clock competition were played. A large number of ladies and gentlemen were present during- the day, and the management were assiduous in prom/O'tmg Uieir comfort. Mrs Finlayson (wife ot the president) was assisted in dupesMuntf hospitality by Mesdlnmes Mk*fieM» and R A Bodle, and Misses Maxfield (2) Ryburn (2), Dingwa.ll, and Brown. The games in the competition were interesting- and exciting, it being in doubt till the end of the cay who would be in the final with the Newmarket champion team The team proved to be Wellington, and the runners up in the championship banner contest. The fallowing are tne results of the afternoon's play:— THIRD ROUND. Evans (skip), 23,-beat F. W. Court (SlS^ie 3'( S toip), 21, beat Ponsford (S APtie occurred at the 21st head and was played off, with the result that Hoyte was the victor. Ballinger (skip), 29, beat Bunting (S II PW. Brookes (skip), 19, beat Crowley (skip), 16-' FOURTH ROUND. H. W. Brookes (skip), 22, beat Evans (SlSiiinJer .(skip), 27, beat Hoyte (skip), 15. Winners to play oft. \ large number of bowling enthusiasts attended Remuera green to-day to witness the final between Brookes team and Ballinger's team for the Stewart Dawson trophies. A splendid o-ame resulted; indeed, old hands said it was the finest game ever played in Auckland. At half-time the teams were eve©, and right up to the last head they went almost neck and neck. The last shot for Newmarket, if successful, would have won them the ;match, but it just missed, and Wellington won by one point amid great applause.
