STATISTICS
According to the Registrar-General's estimate, the population of the colony increased last year by 13,04:3. Of this number 11,155 re]; resents the excess of births over deaths, and ISS7 conies from immigration. Inelus'lvo of 39,----854"Maoris, this brings the total to 706,320. in addition to these ii. is reckoned that there are 3263 Chinese in the colony. Mr Yon. Dadelszerr appends the following remarks: — Excluding- Maoris the population of the colony increased at the rate of 1.75 per cent, during" the year. The birth rate in IS 00 was 25.13 per 1000 of the mean population, and the death rate 10.24, as against 25.74 and 9.54 respectively in 1898. The number of births registered In 1800 (18,8!55) was actually "less than in IS9S (18.055), and so with the increased population the rate for I'SOO is considerably lower. Deaths in 1899 (7GSO) exceeded (he number registered in .1898 (724-1) by 430, and thus increased the rate from '0.54 to 10.24. The number of marriages (excluding those contracted between Maoris) solemnised in 1800 is estimated at 54:10, giving a rate of 7.24, against 5001 and 0.9.1, the actual number and rate in 1898. From the table the last 13 years' birth-rate is shown to have steadily decreased from 111.32 in ISSS, to 25.13 last year. This shows a drop of 0.62 the greatest decrease since 1802, when the rate was suddenly lowered 1.18. The death rate is the highest but one in the table. The marriage rate is the highest in the table.
