THE VICTORIA CROSS.
SEVERAL AWARDS.
LONDON, February 3.
.The Victoria Cross has been conferred on the. late Hon. F. Roberts, and also on Captains W. Congreve and H. D. Reed, and Corporal Nurse, of the C6th Battery, for conspicuous bravery in assisting the g-uns at the battle of Colenso.
.- [The following short account of the deed for which the cross was awarded in the above instances, and which all but Lieutenant Roberts have survived to appreciate, will be of interest :— Colonel Long, with his batteries, was within SOO yards of the Mauser muzzle. The fire was concentrated on him ; men, horses, and guns suffered severely. Then took place a scene of splendid heroism. Determined to rescue the guns or die in the attempt, Captain Sehofield, one of the staff officers' to' General Buller, Captain Congreve, of the Rifle Brigade, and Lieutenant, Roberts, on ' General Clery-s staff, dashed forward with supreme recklessness. Two guns they rescued, but man after man, and horse alter horse, fell bullet riddled, till at last General Clery ordered the. abandonment of the remaining guns. Here it was that Lieut. Roberts was mortally wounded and Captain Congreve slightly. Lieut. Roberts' death was announced to Lord Roberts on the same day^that he was informed he had been made Cbmmander-in-Chief in South Africa.]
