HUNTLY NOTES.

(From Our Own Correspondent.)

Last evening a well patronised con« cert was held in aid of Mr Duffy, who was accidently blinded while working in the mine. Among- the most acceptable items were: Song, "I Trust Thee Still," Miss Wear; recitation, Miss Mona Da\vson; song,\\riss Troughear; : violin solo, Miss Tattley;. song, "Anchored," Mr C. Gleeson.

Waahi Maoris are lamenting the death of a. baby nephew of King Mahuta. The child was a grand-son of Major Te Whero, to whom the present Government erected a monument near Eangiriri.

The mines are very busy at present, the two shafts and Kimihia drive all being worked. Thirty-two men are already employed at the Extended shaft, and more are intended. It-has been found impossible to supply present demand from two mines; in fact, the demand from the Thames-Paeroa district has been so great that Hamilton and other towns in the Waikato have been unable to obtain sufficient coal. A number of improvements, have been made to facilitate the deliveryof coal from the pit's mouth. .

The scheme proposed for supplying the West Coast towns with coal from the Huntly mines has evidently not been found workable, as the manager has received no intimation of any ]arsce orders for that purpose.

The annual meeting of the Huntly. Cricket Club was held last evening. - The following officers were elected: —• Patron, R W. Lang: president, Wm. Tattley; vice-presidents. Ji P.^ Bailey, L.
