BOROUGH MEETINGS.
ONEHUNGA.
The fortnightly meeting of the Onehunga Bor6ugh Council was held last night. Present: Messrs Fleming, Lakiug. Stoupe, Shaldrick, Colledgv, Hill, Rowe, Bradley, and McLeod. In the absence of the Mayor (Dr. Erson) Mr Fleming presided.
Grazing Cattle.—Mr H. B. Morton, chairman of the One Tree Hill Eoad Board, wrote that Mr John Dean had complained to him that he had been requested by the Onehunga. Ranger to take out the ordinary depasturing licenses for his cattle. Mr Dean considered this unfair, as the ruin (Hardington's flat) where his cattle grazed was neutral territory as per agreement between the Onehunga Borough
Council and One Tree Hill Road Board. Mr Laking said Mr Morton was under a misapprehension. Mr Dean owned property in the One Tree Hill district, but he resided in Onehunga. The same difficulty occurred last year. Mr Dean was a resident of Onehunga, and ought therefore to comply with all the by-laws of the Borough the same as other people. He moved that a reply be sent to Mr Morton informing him that while the Council is anxious to maintain the present arrangement with the One Tree Hill Road Board for grazing cattle, they' are agreed that a strict compliance with the Borough by-laws is absolutely necessary on the part of all the residents of Onehunga. The resolution was agreed to.
Departmental Duties. —In the- absence of the Mayor, Mr Rowe moved that the heads of the various depa<rtments be directly responsible to the Council for all work done in their departments, and that all communications between them and the Council be made in writing through the Town Clerk. Several members having' expressed their doubts as to the probable effect of the resolution, if carried, in the. various committees, it was agreed on the motion of Mr Shaldrick, to defer further consideration until next meeting. More Light.—The Auckland Gas Qompany wrote expressing their willingness to fit all the street lamps with incandescent burners, provided the price per lamp is raised to £ 3 12/6 per annum and three more lamps erected. The offer was accepted.^ Retiring Members. — Mr Lairing said as that would be the last time he would attend as a member of the Council, he being one of the retiring members, he would like to express his sense of the uniform courtesy and willingness at all times to oblige on the part of Captain Richardson, Town Clerk, and all the other officers of the Borough. He had served on the Council for four years, and he had received nothing but kindness at the hands of the Town Clerk and his fellow-officers. He (Mr Laking) had always found them diligent and trustworthy, and he wished to bear public record to that fact. Mr Rowe moved a vote of thanks to Mr Laking- for his painstaking- services to the Borough dur-ing-the four years he had., been & member of the Council. The, resolution was innanimously agreed to, and was ordered to be entered in the minute - book. In presenting the vote Mr Fleming said he did so with pleasiire, and he hoped Mr Laking would continue to serve his adopted town as opportunity afforded. Finance.—The Treasurer read his usual financial statement, as follows: —General account, debit balance, £180 11/8; waterworks account* credit • balance,' £205 9/6;' recreation reserves account, credit balance,. £46 14/7; contractors' deposit account, £23 14/; domain account, debit balance, £7 1/3; due from the last nain---ed account to the generaT1' funio", £74 2/1. ..
