I C. Eetter won the clay pigeon 1 shooting contest at Johnsonville on Saturday, with 15 breaks out of 18. W. S. Broderick, J. H. Kingdon, S. Scott, and W. H. Bonny, with 14 breaks each, divided second money. I A friendly societies' demonstration ' was held on Sunday afternoon. _ A large and representative procession traversed the principal streets of the city, and vwas followed by a public meeting in the Opera House, at which several addresses were delivered.
Mrs Blake, whoa few years ago was sentenced to imprisonment for life for attempting to poison her husband., was released on Saturday on the ground of ill-health. The Education Department an ounces that it is proposed to introduce cane weaving and basket work as manual occupations into some of the native schools. Teachers are recommended to plant osiers for basket work in suitable localities. A .course of instruction in fruit-growing is also suggested.
WESTPORT, this day
The coal export last week was 9110 tons 15cwt, of which the Westport Coal Company shipped 8275 tons lewt, and the Cardiff Company 535 tons 14cwt. The Westport Coal Company's export for last month constitvited a record.
