THAMES.

THAMES, this day. MAY QUEEN.
Work is being- vigorously pushed ahead in the May Queen section, and it is possible good prospects will be met here in a few weeks' time, as when work was carried on at the No 4 reef in this section a short time ago, a good :class of ore was won. It will be rejmembered that work had to be susjpended here until the No. 7 level had jbeen completed, and the crosscut comjmenced, which would come out imuie.diately under the winze in order to allow the ore won from it to be con j'veyed to the surface. The crosscut 'from No. 7 level, now being driven, to come out at the point indicated, is in a distance of 75ft from the shaft. ■ A start will be made shortly with I sinking the old winze at No. 6 level on the No. 4 lode, so that ore of a payable quality should be coming to hand jfrom here in a short period. As soon •as the work of fixing the clips at No. j7 chamber, which will take a day or 'two, is completed a start will be made Ito sink the shaft to the depth required 'for the proposed No. 8 level. No. 7 level has been timbered up and flatsheets laid . One of the new cages ;for the Queen of May shaft has been I put in position and tested and passed by the Inspector of Mines (Mr Coutts). At the Saxon section work for the reception of the winding ; machinery at No. 1 winze has been icompleted, also the work of laying I concrete foundation for the engine. I The work of sinking No. 2 winze has ■had to be discontinued at a depth of 17ft owing to an influx of water. When j connection has been effected with the two winzes here a rise will be put up for the purpose of forming connection with No. 2 winze. At the Cardigan section a start has been made to drive on No. 2 reef eastward of the crosscut. The leading stope on No. 2 lode is being timbered. The satisfactory manner in which the various works are being pushed ahead by Mr Jas. Park, thie company's general managei, should be most gratifying to shareI holders.
Repairs, to the county wnterrace will not b% completed and the water turned on before Tuesday. Mea.nwhile The batteries using county water are kept at a standstill. The. county engineer found it necessary to remove 80ffc of the water race for the purpose ot making" room for sending loose debris down the. hillside from where the slip occurred. There is now 102 ft. of the structure to repair, and the men were unable to commence work until the loose boulders overhead were removed, as until this was done the work would have been extremely dangerous.
