The old people of the Costley Home, Epsom, enjoyed a musical treat of a high order last night. The occasion was a concert given by Miss Maud Howard prior t;o her departure for Australia, the feature of the lady's singing being that the heart is always heard in the voice. The appropriate programme, which was given in good styje and with fine effect, consisted of the following items: Quartette, Misses Howard and Laing and Messrs W. Prouse and J. W. Kyan; song, "When the Heart is Young," Miss Howard; song, "The Miner," Mr Ryan; song, "Ye Banks and Braes," Miss Mary Laing; song, "Queen of Angels," Mr Prouse; duet, "Halcyon Days" (perhaps the finest item, the singers having to repeat the latter half), Misses Howard and Laing; recitation, Mr Prouse; pianoforte solo, Miss Nelson; song, "Life's Lullaby," Miss Howard; song, "Father O'Flynn," Mr Ryan (recalled); song, "Parted," Miss Laing; song, "God Be With You," Mr Prouse; song, "The Old Folks at Home," Miss Howard; quartette, Misses Howard and Laing, Messrs Prouse and Ryan. Mr Moss, the manager of the Home, who made a very happy chairman, thanked the singers and invited them to come again, and wished Miss Howard success in her mxisical career. It is to be hoped that the kind example of the young lady will be the means of inducing other fine singers to go out and sing for the old people. A kinematographic, phonographic, and myrioramic entertainment will be given in the Ponsonby Hall on Monday evening next. A social gathering was tendered by railway officials last night in the Criterion Hotel, Albert-street, 'to Mr Owen, foreman of the Auckland sheds, who is transferred to Wangamii. Mr A. V. Macdonald presided, and referred to the regret in the Railway Department at Mr Owen's departure. He also presented him with a purse of sovereigns generously subscribed by employees. Mr Owen replied in a happy speech, and thanked the donors for their kind present.
