POLICE COURT.
THIS DAY,
(Before Mr H. W. Brabant, 5.M..) Drunkenness. — John Johnstone pleaded guilty to having been found drunk for the fifth time within six months. He was convicted and given until to-morrow morningl to leave town, as he stated he 'had work at Te Aroha. A first offender was convicted and discharged. Cruelty to Animals. —Joseph Roach pleaded guilty to cruelly beating a horse. Mr Brookfi^ld, who appeared for the S.P.C.A., pointed out that the defendant was before the Court last February and fined for working a horse almost covered with sores. His Worship inflicted a fine of £3 and costs. By-law Cases.—For leaving a cab unattended Ben Buck was fined 1/; for leaving carts unattended David Mclndoe, William Stirling, William Clarke, and William Burtenshaw were each fined 5/ and costs 7/, and Robert Montgomery 10/ and costs. Nathaniel Curtin, Patrick Kelly, and Henry Avenell wer each fined 5/ and costs 7/ for driving round a corner at other than a walking pace, and John Williams 10/ and costs for a like offence. A boy named Frank Cantell pleaded guilty to throwing a stone in Vincent-street, damaging a door to the extent of 10/. The Magistrate discharged him with a caution, the boy's mother undertaking to pay for the damage. Theft.— John Eobertson pleaded 2-uilty to stealing a pair of boots, the property of Daniel Cotton, and was sentenced to one month's hard labour. Peter Hansen pleaded guilty to stealing a pair of trousers belonging to Wm. McLean, and was sent to gaol for two months. Both accused had been previously convicted of theft. A Disorderly House.—Lily Clarke pleaded not guilty to managing and Jane Whelan and Lizzie Parnell not <milty to assisting in the management of a brothel. Evidence was given by Sergeants Treanor and Gordon, and police-constables, who had kept a watch on the suspected house. His Worship said the evidence that the house was a brothel was over-whelm-ing, and he must hold all three responsible and convict them all. The Sub-Inspector pointed out that all three accused had bad "records," Clarke and Whelan having been previously convicted on a similar charge. These two were each fined £10, in default two months' hard labour, and Lizzie Parnell £5, in default one month. An application for time in which to pay the fine was refused.
